Canon aptly participates in the Megapixel race with the IXUS 200 IS. The small compact cameras already feature an extremely tiny image sensor, and to apply it with no less than 12 million pixels seems to be a contradiction. However, not as far as marketing is concerned; they seem all too happy to see high resolution figures pass by. Still, Canon is showing slight traces of change, although this does not (yet) apply to the Canon Digital IXUS 200 IS camera, but, who knows? Perhaps the next generation of IXUS cameras will await the same fate.

When you decide to go for a Canon IXUS camera, it is undoubtedly the striking design you fell for. It is remarkable that Canon always succeeds in restyling this kind of design. Sometimes it’s only minor differences which are found between the different generation IXUS cameras, but it is exactly this subtlety that makes Canon stand out from the crowd. Striking color tones, a stylish finish and the material used may all be considered main features of a Canon Digital IXUS camera. The camera does provide many handy automated modes, including a large amount of scenes, face detection and 720p video recording. The Canon Digital IXUS 200 IS camera has been in our possession for a short period of time.

The Canon PowerShot A480 has been launched as a replacement for the year-old PowerShot A470 model. Compared to that camera, the Canon A480 has a completely restyled body that’s about a quarter smaller overall, has a more traditional shape, and simplifies the user interface by removing the mode dial and adding dedicated buttons for control of zoom, operating mode and playback. The 3.3x optical zoom lens in the Canon A480 is ever so slightly wider-angle and less powerful than the 3.4x zoom of the A470, and offers 35mm equivalent focal lengths from a rather tight 37mm wide angle to a 122mm telephoto. Maximum aperture ranges from f/3.0 to f/5.8 across the zoom range. The sensor resolution has been boosted from seven to ten megapixels, from a 1/2.3″-type CCD image sensor, and the Canon A480 is based around the previous generation of DIGIC III image processor. The number of scene modes has also been increased from ten to fifteen.
