Differences Between Education And Literacy

Most of the people are mistaken between education and literacy. They think that if we know and learn how to read and write, we are literate. But mind you, never get confused over the two words. Literacy is far beyond education. The one we talked about above is merely gaining education.

Literacy does not come solely by education. Nor is it necessary that all the educated people are literate. The wrath of the Global Warming which the entire world is facing right now is an example of educated illiteracy. On the international Earth’s day, people were requested to switch off their lights and other electrical appliances for an hour, but how many of us did that? Very few to answer in support.

All of us are in a rat race to attain the highest level of degree so that we can be called as highly educated and literate people. Most of us do fulfill our desires but we are not heading towards literacy. What we are gaining today is the bookish knowledge. We only want to study as much as is sufficient to make us doctors or engineers, but we do not get the social knowledge. We do not how to live with other fellow beings and what are the norms of living in a society.

Mere knowledge of words is not literacy. To be literate we need to understand things from all perspectives. It can be more precisely said that the one who has the benevolence for all the fellow beings and takes right decisions at right times is a literate in true sense.
